Kadhalan (Tamil: காதலன்; English: Lover) is a Tamil film released in 1994, directed by S. Shankar. The film's score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman and written by S. Shankar. The film stars Prabhu Deva and Nagma in the lead roles. Kadhalan was dubbed in other languages upon release. The film was dubbed in Hindi as Humse Hai Muqabala and in Telugu as Premikudu.
Kadhalan was a huge commercial success. It was also the first Tamil film ever to be dubbed into Hindi. This film displayed actor-dancer Prabhu Deva's energetic dance moves and acting which, along with the direction, comedy by Vadivelu and the music, were hugely popular aspects of the movie. The film was a box office mega hit, and went onto make an impact across the globe. It won many recognitions and honours, including the Filmfare Best Film Award South.

The background music score and the soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman. The soundtrack, released as Kadhalan: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, features 9 songs composed by Rahman, with lyrics scored by Vaali and Vairamuthu. This soundtrack cemented the popularity of A. R. Rahman and earned him national acclaim. New styles were experimented with, as in the song "Pettai Rap", a Madras bashai song which was written in a rap-like style, interspersing Tamil with English words.
The synthesizer and the keyboard feature while drawing from Tamil folk music. Songs like "Urvasi Urvasi" and "Mukkabla" became huge hits and were played everywhere in South India. Even in the north these songs gained popularity because of the dubbing of the movie into Hindi.
